You have to throw a lot of spaghetti at the wall

Anyone who tries to create anything knows that you have to make a lot of mistakes. I’ve read about, and seen, great works of art painted on canvass that have earlier attempts by the artist underneath the final version. I’ve read drafts of Dylan Thomas poetry with markings and edits by the poet. Songwriting is like that. You can wait for whatever the “muse” might be, or you can force yourself to sit down and WORK at writing. The problem almost every songwriter I know has is that sometimes you just aren’t sure if you’ve written a keeper, and you don’t know until you try it out on people. I usually try my new songs out at a loud venue where most people aren’t even listening. The folks who are listening can give you a clue about whether you’ve actually written a song.
