It’s been a hard winter on Big Walker mountain, at least in the last few days. Today was the day we were expecting some thaw, but there is still a foot of hard, crusted snow on the ground. Three hungry deer came by today to eat the corn I put in the lane for the crows. The two babies came first, without hesitating and put their heads down to eat. The older one, Mom, I guess, was very cautious. She approached from the meadow, on the other side of the cow fence, and didn’t jump the fence until she was sure it was safe. When she finally jumped the fence, all three deer feasted on the shelled corn. Later, Molly and I went out to play. Molly is usually a very obedient dog, but today she went wild and took off down the lane the way the deer had gone. Nothing I could do would make her come back and I began to panic as she got closer to the road. It’s not a well-travelled road, but I couldn’t get the picture out of my head of a truck coming suddenly around the bend and not seeing Molly until it was too late. I called Mary Sue to come to the door and call Molly back. Mary Sue gave a sweet, high “whoop” and Molly turned around and came running back to the house. The deer sauntered up the hill and disappeared into the trees. Until later, y’all.
